James chapter three is a summary of how important it is to “tame the tongue.” Often, a Bible Study on this topic can lead us to feel a bit of guilt and shame for what we have allowed to come out of our mouth. Maybe we face the reality of the pain that others have caused us with the words that have been spoken over us.
The Power of the Tongue
In James chapter three, James starts out by talking about how not everyone should want to be a leader or a teacher of God’s Word because they are often judged more harshly. James talks about how it is very difficult to overcome the “power of the tongue compares it to the rudder on ship, or a small spark starting a large forest fire.
“Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” (James 3:5,6 TPT)
The tongue is a powerful tool in your tool belt when it comes to living your life; especially if you are a leader or a teacher of God’s Word.
Tools for Life Application
Even though James references leaders and teachers in the beginning of the chapter, this entire chapter can be applied to the life of any Christian. In fact, the core lesson in this chapter is about being mature enough in your faith so that you can be a teacher of God’s Word. The words that come out of our mouth is not a behavior issue, it is a heart issue. Sometimes we address this topic with a heart of despair and defeat because controlling the tongue is not easy as it seems in the book of James. We know the reality of this battle that we all face in our life as Christians and as human beings.
But it doesn’t have to be difficult, especially if you can address the true issue behind the words you say. In our free online Bible Study on James Chapter Three we will address the real issue that is stopping you from growing and maturing in your faith, and why you are unable to tame your tongue. It is all outlined in our Bible Study on James Chapter Three!
