This week we will cover James Chapter 3 Summary and Bible Study Questions. James chapter three is a summary of how important it is to “tame the tongue.” This topic can lead us to feel guilt and shame for what we have allowed to flow out of our mouths.
James Chapter Three
Read James Chapter Three
This is not always an easy chapter to read. Howver, we need to understand the weight of that responsibility with every word that comes out of our mouth, especially when teaching God’s Word.
We should not deny the true thoughts and feelings that we struggle with. However, we need to realize that not everyone is the right audience for the words we speak. When we are mature in our faith, we are able to manage our feelings, words, and insecurities. We understand the weight of being a teacher of the Word, so we are prudent with what we say.
In knowing the power our tongue has on those we might try to lead to Christ and whom we have influence over, we also need to understand just how difficult it is to “tame the tongue,” as is referenced in James Chapter 3 Verse 8. When we become humble to the reality of what our words can do to other people and confess that we have truly had an untamed tongue in the past and present and probably will in the future, then we are able to offer grace to those we know are causing pain with the words they say.
Both tasks are not easy to accomplish, and they truly do require maturity in your faith.
As we mature in our faith, we need to ask ourselves what it is going to take in order to be a mature Christian.
It is good to come up with practical ways that will help you to mature as a Christian. I think the two tips I am going to list below will have already been mentioned to you, but the fact is we need to do what we know. So here are some tips on how to become a mature Christian:
Know Your True Identity: James 3:13-18 mentions a lot of reasons why someone might be lacking in maturity. All of these reasons are based on insecurity. The best way to combat insecurity in your life is to understand your value to God and this world.
Keep Planting the Good Seeds:
“Good seeds of wisdom’s fruit will be planted with peaceful acts by those who cherish making peace.”
– James 3:18 TPT
I love this version of this scripture because it mentions that we are planting seeds in this world and in our relationships. Even if there are relationships that are difficult to bear or ministry life is getting overwhelming, we always have the choice of what seeds we get to plant in this world, in our minds, and in our relationships.
Seeds of peace, understanding, empathy, forgiveness, faith, hope, and love. All of this will help us and those around us grow in our relationship with Christ. If we continue to grasp the words and lies of the enemy, then we will continue to plant seeds that only grow weeds.
It’s not always easy being the leader or the person who goes first in a relationship; however, that’s what being a mature Christian who is a teacher of the Word is called to do. You might not be a minister, but if you are a follower of Jesus, then you have been called to disciple others, and that makes you a leader in their life!
Prayer
Holy Spirit help us to know the true love of Christ in our life so that we can be loving to others. We humbly ask that you will gently show us where our hearts are clinging to jealousy, envy, and selfish ambition. Holy Spirit, show us another way and give us a heart that is free to live in your unending love and grace. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. – Amen!
One way to know if we are living in the full identity that Christ has given us is that shame has been replaced with grace. This is a defining moment for every Christian woman. Replacing shame with grace is done by surrendering to Jesus every single day. This is why maturity in our faith is not an easy task because it requires daily surrender. We need to have an ongoing relationship with the Holy Spirit. Pride is the only thing holding us back from daily surrender to the Holy Spirit and maturing in our faith.
