James Chapter 1 Summary
Read James Chapter 1
The book of James is titled after the name of the author. While reading the NLT version of the book of James, we can see that it is addressed to the “twelve tribes of Israel,” which also refer to the Jewish believers that are scattered across the nations. Knowing who James is writing to helps us to understand the context behind his heart for the words written. Obviously, he is writing to a group of people who are scattered and away from their homeland.
As we read James chapter one, we can see that it is written with a heart for encouragement, especially to those who may be struggling with their faith. This chapter in the book of James puts our trials into perspective, and it helps us to understand that joy can come after trials, hardships, and overcoming our temptations.
When life is difficult and discouraging, then we might be tempted to lose hope and faith in God.
In James 1:5 it says:
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
We need to trust God’s goodness even if we do not get the response we are looking for.
James chapter one clearly shows us what we need to focus on and whom to set our eyes upon. All of life is made up of our choices. Do we look to the Word and do what the Word says, or do we look to the world and do what the world says?
In James 1:25 it says:
But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom, and continues, not being a hearer who forgets, but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.
Here it says if you look carefully at the law that sets you free and do what it says, not forgetting what you heard, then we will be blessed.
God wants us to remember the truth. He wants us to remember what His word says. He wants us to do what the word says. What we think, say, and do in this world does matter. How has the world corrupted the desires of our hearts? This is what we need to think about when we read James chapter one.
We need to ask the Holy Spirit to help us remember and set our eyes upon the Word and God’s truth.
As you read James chapter one, think about whether or not you want what God’s Word promises or do you want what the world promises.
